While I like this picture a lot, I don't get a sense of horror and/or the macabre from it. It's a little unsettling, to be sure, in that it has a dreamlike quality thanks to the low contrast and filmy lighting, as well as the seemingly incongruous figure and lantern. There is also the fact that her face is hidden, which lends an air of the unknown to the image. But overall, I'm not getting creepiness from it. The light, soft colors of the hair and dress and the bright yellow of the lantern make the image evoke childhood playing rather than anything frightening. I think if the lantern were a different color, if the setting were darker allowing the lantern to throw light and shadow, or if the lantern were simply removed, a more sinister effect might have been created. That being said, I find this picture to have a calm, dreamlike and magical quality to it, and I think it's very lovely.
